Mister Bianco

In the second half of 2023, Kew institution Mister Bianco moved to an expansive new space after 13 years of trade at their original site. Defined as a "precinct", this new space would allow the expansion of the Italian restaurant to include a cocktail bar and dedicated events space. The brief was to evolve the existing brand – retaining familiarity with a loyal local audience while signalling a new era with a contemporary visual language that would embrace the vibrant personality of owner and chef Joseph Vargetto.

The solution brings together the idea of "precinct", facade and proximity to public transport through the influence of Italian modernist architecture – particularly train stations and other municipal buildings. Referencing another famous Italian trilogy, Dante's Divine Comedy links the three spaces through iconography, copywriting and a framework for colour palettes of each space, guiding Mills Gorman Architects in their approach to interiors. Typesetting for print collateral draws from classical literature, as does paper stock and debossed leather on covers; illustrations are inspired by mid-century Italian posters and projections of iconic Italian cinema in the cocktail bar are represented through bill cards.
